A new trend has been finding its place in the kpop sphere; sexy everywhere and anywhere. Of course there have always been sexier concepts even long before present time, but something seems to have happened, because now basically all choreographies involve some kind of buttshaking, bodyrolling or handgroping. It's fair to say it hasn't always been this sexually suggestive. From only a couple groups and solo singers being more daring, it now seems to have become the new norm.
It has proven to be a successful move for many girl groups, most notably being Girl's Day switching drastically from their cute debut concept to the sexy one they do today and finding lots of success with it.
Only in January this year, we've seen not only the sultry Something, but also comebacks from AOA and Dal Shabet as well as Rainbow Blaxx's upcoming sub-unit debut all playing the sexy card.
Dal Shabet released B.B.B (Big Baby Baby) on January 7th, once again trying to make their name known with a 80's sounding uptempo song and video. For a group that's been around since 2011, they're still relatively unknown and has not yet found themselves a unique style or trademark. Unfortunately, I don't think this comeback will help them gaining any new popularity either.
When the music started playing I had to double check the video title to make sure I hadn't accidentally clicked on a KARA song. It's very 80's influenced with synthesizers playing all over the place, but it fails to be very memorable. There's nothing wrong with the song, it's just not amazing. The video itself is not very groundbreaking either, with basic sets and minimal use of any kind of props. I also don't really understand the English words and phrases spread across the screen or the orange stairs (?) that the girls stand around in various outfits. I do have to applaud them (well, their stylists) in the warderobe department, because all the girls look amazing and I absolutely love the outfits. The high waisted pants, blazers and midriff revealing tops is a great look for them.
AOA is a very interesting group becasue of their two units; the dance unit and the band unit (AOA Black), and while they have released songs in both forms, it seems their agency FNC has decided to put more focus on the former one. I think it's a shame, because the idea of a girl band was something new and exciting and otherwise they're just like any other girl group. FNC houses both CNBLUE, FTIsland and solist Juniel, who all are instrumentally based acts, and they were trying to see if the same premise could work with a girl group as well. I know that the girls of AOA who are in the Black unit are capable of playing instruments and performing them well, but it seems the public are more interested in seeing their butts.
The song Miniskirt similar to their last effort Confused, and shares a similar sound to quite a few of Sistar's songs, which is not very strange considering both being Brave Brothers' productions. It has a nice melody and features Hyorin-esque falsetto vocals to boot. I like it, but it's nothing out of the ordinary.
The video is what you would expect really, consisting of both group shots and solo shots. The dance is very centered around their backsides, which the outfits they're wearing emphasizes. It's quite boring, to be honest, for those of us not partial to sexualized body parts. The solo shots are pretty much them looking sexy, showing off their bodies and smiling at the camera in different settings. And that's about it.
I might be the only one for thinking this, but why another subgroup? Don't get me wrong, I see what they're doing, taking the most sexy, well known members and put them together to release another sexy single, but they could've just come back as the whole group instead and it would have been just as awesome. Still, I'm actually quite excited for this, because I wanted a sexy concept from Rainbow for so long. I loved A, like I was obsessively listening to it and loved everything about the comeback except DSP's horrible marketing and failing to do the girls justice.
Their latest title tracks were so unfitting for this group with young, beautiful women all in their early to late twenties, and I'm so happy they're doing something different.
I think so far, the song and video looks promising, and God do they look stunning. As well as the snippet of sets which seems to be made up of beautiful old furniture, flowers and...cakes? I have a feeling I'm going to crave all kinds of sweets after watching this.
