Rainbow Blaxx Seduces with "Cha Cha"

After their latest comeback as a full group with Sunshine, it seems like Rainbow is going back to black with the debut of a new, sexy sub-unit - Rainbow Blaxx.
For a group that's been around since 2010, they are still fumbling in the mid tier territory while other groups who debuted the same year has seen success in various forms. I was really excited for this debut, as spoken of in my Sexy Girl Group Recap, because I really like this group of girls.

First things first, the video for Cha Cha was released January 19th, along with their debut mini album. As a general thought, I am a bit disappointed in the execution of this video and song. The concept itself is very basic, it's sexy, but basic. There's nothing they do that haven't been done before in some way, and  because of that it falls a bit short.
Let's dig into the video a bit more, shall we?

Concept
Like mentioned above, the concept is very basic, but also a bit unclear. The teaser photos gave the audience some kind of clue about what was to be expected, but the actual video didn't really live up to those expectations. They sure look great, but I'm not sure what else they're trying to achieve except being just sexually attractive.

Plot
Now this is the point that really confuses me about this video. In the beginning it seems the girls are walking into some kind of place full of candy, cakes, which they so seductively eat. There is also a maid painting Jaekyung's toenails for whatever reason, and a scary woman watching them perform on a television screen. The girls are laying and grinding on the beautiful furniture (and each other) which looks a bit awkward by the way, and what is with that little man watching them through a pair of spectacles?
The real turning point here is when the scary woman comes in and checks on the girls, like literally checks on them. Oh, and is that the scary ghost matchmaker from Master's Sun? She really creeps me out.
Anyway, she goes around and takes the girls' measurements, which makes me think she runs some kind of brothel that the girls are a part of. I could be completely mistaken, but that's the impression I got from watching it.
So to conclude this very confusing story line and try to bind it together with the lyrics, at least from what I've gathered - The girls sing about asking their love to come to them, and wanting an answer whether they want them or not. A possible interpretation is that they are kept under some sort of restriction, symbolized by the brothel woman in this case, but are constantly tempted by their lust - the candies and cakes. The consume eating of the forbidden fruit so to speak, and crystals start to fall from their mouths as a punishment? Now, that's the only part I still haven't connected, but I'm sure there's some hidden meaning behind it. Right?

All and all, I think I've somewhat understood what is happening in the video, and if it's like that then it does make sense, but it's very ambiguous. There is no clear indication of the plot, and you're left to decide on your own. The only part I disliked was the measurement taking, because those kind of things really makes me uncomfortable.

Scenery
I adore most of the scenery in this video, but the "brothel" house scenes stand out the most to me. Even the body scans are not too exploited for my liking, but I guess it could just be my affection for the pretty pastry. There's so much food porn going on in this video, and the coloring is absolutely beautiful. It's vibrant and bright and the warmer tone of the filtering makes it very nice to watch. I think the furniture is gorgeous and looks so good together with the flowers and cakes.
The other sets are fine, but not nearly as exciting. It's your standard kpop video set, with all kinds of flashy lights and designs.

Styling
I feel like they're going for the "underwear as outerwear" kind of look, with the clothes looking a bit more like lingerie. Honestly, it's decent, but not spectacular. They look good, obviously, because they are beautiful women, but the clothes don't really do them any more favors. They all have natural hair colors and some even wear lenses, and it all looks pretty but again, nothing groundbreaking. Mostly I feel like it's all been done before to a certain extent. I also could not for the name of me tell them apart from their backup dancers in the dancing shots, and that is a big problem. And also, if they had to use backup dancers anyway, could they have not released this as a full group instead?

Choreography
Again, sexy but basic. Recycled moves, if you get my drift. I didn't find anything overly outstanding. They're moving their bodies seductively, touching themselves in various places like most dances nowadays. I wanted them to do a dance with at least something worth mentioning, but sadly they didn't.

Conclusion
I like this video and song, but I also feel a bit let down. I wanted it to be amazing, but instead it was just good. They need to realize that in order to make it in the industry, singing, dancing and looking good does not mean you will meet success. In order to do that, you have to either put out material that is memorable and unique, or have a concept that makes you stand out. Rainbow Blaxx is doing none of those things, and for that reason they will continue to float in the middle.

Total Score: 3,1/5
